Plans to build a new Soo lock just took another step forward.
The U.S. House approved funding for its construction Tuesday afternoon.
It’s part of a more than $1 trillion year-end government appropriations bill that will fund the federal government through the end of next September.
The Soo Locks will get more than $75 million to fund the design and construction of a new, second Poe-sized lock.
InvestUP estimates the new lock will create more than a thousand new jobs.
Additional funding will need to be appropriated each year.
The entire Soo Locks project is expected to cost about $1 billion by the time it’s finished.
