Voluntary Environmental Improvement
Launched in 2007, Green Marine is a voluntary environmental improvement program for the maritime industry. Participating companies agree to conduct their operations in a sustainable manner, minimize their environmental footprint, and work toward continuous improvement. Progress is tracked according to eleven specific areas of focus:
- Aquatic Invasive Species
- Cargo Residues
- Community Impacts
- Dry Bulk Handling and Storage
- Environmental Leadership
- Garbage Management
- Greenhouse Gas Emissions
- Oily Water
- Pollutant Air Emissions - NOx
- Pollutant Air Emissions - SOx and Particulate Matter
- Prevention of Spills and Leakages
Participants are ranked on a scale of 1-5 on each relevant issue, with the higher score representing environmental excellence. Self-reporting is verified every two years by outside auditors, and the results are made public to ensure transparency. Through Green Marine's structured approach, companies can benchmark their environmental performance and measure progress toward improving it.
