MASSENA, N.Y. (WWNY) – U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao came to Massena Tuesday bearing a gift — a $6 million one.
“For the construction of a new visitors center,” she said.
Chao said millions of dollars have been invested to speed ships through the Seaway. Standing with north country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, she said it’s time to encourage people to come see it all.
“This new center will serve as a cornerstone for tourism in the north country region of New York,” said Chao.
Tuesday’s event at Eisenhower Lock was billed as a 60th anniversary celebration for the Seaway. But the announcement of the new visitors center stole the show. It will replace the one built 60 years ago.
A new visitors’ center has been talked about for years. So when the boss herself announced it would finally be built, the excitement pulsed through the crowd.
“This is a huge announcement when you think in terms of the Seaway’s ability to draw people to our region. It’s one of our gems,” said Timmy Currier, Massena mayor.
