U.S.-flag ships moved a total of 9.9 million tons of cargo in June, up 2.3% compared to last year and “a near mirror image” of the month’s five-year average, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association, which represents 13 U.S. companies and their 46 ships.
June 2019 iron ore cargos for steel production totaled 5.1 million tons, an increase of 10.5% compared to June 2018, but a decrease of 7.6% from the month’s five-year average.
Coal shipments, which have been falling steadily in recent years, fell to 1.3 million tons in June, down 5.2% from the year before and down 24.2% compared to June’s 5-year average. Limestone shipments reached 2.9 million tons, down 7.7% compared to June 2018.
