OGDENSBURG, N.Y. (WWNY) – United Express flights at Ogdensburg International Airport are not just taking off – they’re soaring. The airline handled over 3,000 passengers in just its third month of operations there.
“We’re seeing a great uptick in the numbers…and the numbers just keep rising,” said Wade Davis, Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority executive director.
The airline that preceded it carried an average of less than 1,000 per month. United Express passenger numbers could soon rival those of Ogdenseburg’s flagship carrier Allegiant.
“They’re not really competing with each other. They’re pulling additional customers into Ogdensburg,” said Davis.
United Express flies to Chicago and Washington, D.C. Allegiant flies seasonally to Florida. The airport will soon have handled 150,000 passengers since its expansion three years ago.
The airport is not the only port growing in Ogdensburg. The shipping port on the waterfront recently received an award from the Seaway Corporation. That award was for more than doubling its cargo tonnage last year.
The port is handling more and more cargo that is large and complex. That includes wind turbine parts and brew tanks.
“We have a great longshoreman union down there. We have very little damage on things. We have a great work ethic down there and that translates into satisfied customers,” said Davis.
Another strength at the port is the convergence of water, rail and roads. Davis said that helps cut costs and get things where they need to go.
