May marks first saltie arrival in Duluth 60 years ago

Sixty years ago on May 3, the first foreign shipped arrived under Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge.

A crowd of more than 3,000 people gathered to cheer the arrival of the 475-foot “Ramon de Larrinaga” which stopped at a Duluth grain elevator to load oats.

The saltie’s journey from England was made possible by the opening of the Saint Lawrence Seaway.

Since then, nearly three billion tons of cargo with an estimated value of more than $450 billion have moved through the St. Lawrence Seaway.
