Great Lakes limestone shipments increase in January 2019

The Lake Carriers’ Association reports that U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters (lakers) moved 3.1 million tons of cargo in January 2019, an increase of 110 percent compared to a year ago. The January float was also 44 percent above the month’s five-year average.

 

 

The limestone trade totaled 195,594 tons in January 2019, an increase of 100 percent over January 2018. Sand shipments in January 2019 totaled 16,763 tons, a 100 percent increase over January 2018. Cement shipments also increased in January 2019 to 130,743 tons, compared to 48,792 tons in January 2018.
